Jean Jouve, violoneux de Saint-Ilpize, sur la commune de Villeneuve d'Allier, au sud de Brioude, présente un répertoire à danser alliant traditionnel local, marches et contredanses diverses. Son jeu très fin, bien cadencé, opérant volontiers des variations mélodiques, rend sa musique très vivante. C'est aussi un excellent chanteur. Cette enquête, la seule réalisée auprès de lui, fait entendre 30 morceaux.
Il joue sur un violon prêté et préparé par John Wright, vraisemblablement pour l'enregistrement. Son violon à lui, resté dans sa boîte, présente des dimensions différentes au niveau du manche et il a du mal à se repérer sur cet instrument prêté, quoi qu'il en apprécie fortement le son.
L'étrangeté de certaines notes, en particulier les finales (tombant sous le 3e doigt) sont trop hautes ou trop basses. Il ne s'agit pas d'un tempérament particulier, mais d'un placement hasardeux des doigtés.
